12U Gold Go To Disney

The 12U Gold played in the USSSA World Series at Disneyworld. It was hot and the softball was great. The girls played well in the blazing heat taking 2nd in their pool. After surviving a monsoon type rain out, the tournament was well played and hard fought against some great teams from as far away as Washington state. All the families had a super time at the Disney & Universal parks. It was a excellent way to finish off a very successful 2008 season. On to the game details.
The Tinley Park Rockers 12U Gold traveled to Orlando, Florida to play in the "USSSA Fast Pitch 12U World Series”. The team finished 2nd in Pool Play by going 2-1. The Rockers opened Pool Play with bats as hot as the weather. The Rockers played the Collegeville, Pennsylvania X-Treme Red and won by the score of 14-1. In this game, the Rockers were lead by the pitching of Kathleen Steffensen and the hitting and defensive play of Lauren Beatty and Amy Vos. The Rockers lost their second game to the Niceville, Florida High Intensity by the close score of 3-2. The Rockers had a great pitching effort from Sarah Herold in this game. Megan Glynn contributed with the bat and called a great game behind the plate. Haley Hamann made some great defensive plays to turn back Niceville and keep the Rockers in the game. Ashley Hesse had a key hit to give the Rockers a 2-1 lead that they could not hold on to. The Rockers threaten in every inning but the High Intensity made the plays to defeat the Rockers in this very exciting game. The Rockers needed to win the final Pool Game to get a bye in the first round of the playoffs. The Rockers played the West Palm Beach, Florida Pride and won the game 9-3. Sara Koniewicz and Angela Robison took the Rocker team on their back and lead the team to victory. The Rockers entered the championship playoffs and played the Annandale, Virginia Stingrays. This game started at 11:00 AM and lasted over 4 hours. The game went 12 innings and was delayed by a rain storm. The Rockers battled and Stingrays and the Florida heat and won the game 6-5. Allison Kotas took charge of the game by taking part in two double plays (one was unassisted) and both came in extra innings to prevent the Rockers from losing. Rachel Tobolaski came in the relieve Steffensen and pitched outstanding to get the Rockers a win. The Rockers had to play immediately after that game against the Aurora, Indiana EMR club. EMR was well rested and defeated the Rockers by the score of 7-1. The Rockers had a great game by Rebecca Vahldick and Melissa Schobel. Vahldick caught most of the games in this tournament and was the strength for the Rockers all tournament long. Schobel was the ultimate team player by playing many positions and making clutch plays. In all the Rockers Gold had a great experience in Florida. In USSSA play, the Rockers finished the year ranked 8th in the State of Illinois out of 120 teams.

12U Take 2nd place in Oak Lawn

The 12U Gold notched another 2nd place finish in the 31st Annual Oak Lawn Tournament. 14 teams played during the rainy, breezy, crazy weather weekend. The girls played 8 games over the 3 days posting a 6 - 2 record on the way to winning a great team trophy and some individual hardware.

The Friday night game was against the Lockport Pythons. The girls started early and scored often putting up a 7-2 victory. Megan hit a home runs to start the offense for the weekend. Allie played a great 2nd covering the bag on several force plays. The team played well and posted an efficient game.

The Saturday morning game placed the Gold against the 11U Frankfort Flames. It was the Rockers bats that were smoking and wound up with a 12 - 0 victory. Ashley played well on both sides of the diamond. Mel hit in the 2 slot and was solid in the field.

The afternoon game found the Oak Park Windmills White next in the Gold's path. The offense continued to stay red hot with a 14-1 win. Lauren hit a grand slam to lead the offense.

The last pool game pitted the Gold versus the Napervillians. The 1st inning was a rocky one giving up 7 runs. The girls settled down and started to chip away at the lead. Rachel came in and shut down the Villians bats. The weather was not co-operating with rain, dirt & wind constantly fighting. The battle continued until time expired and the Napervillians walked away with an 8-5 win and 1st place in the pool.

Usually winning your pool means you get to sleep in on Sunday, but not in Oak Lawn. In a twist of fate, the Gold was scheduled for a 12:30 start on Sunday. The extra sleep was put to good use and the Palos Storm wished the Rockers had overslept. When the game was over the Gold had posted a 13-1 victory.

Next up the Lincoln Way Storm. This game was tight from the beginning. Bad hops, good hops, hard hit balls & home runs were the stories of this game. The Rockers took the lead 4 - 1 and the Storm came back & tied it. The Rockers added another and the Storm tied it. The Rockers finally took the lead on Katho's home run for the 6-5 win. This game was well played & exciting from start to finish.

The Hickory Hills team had worked its way through games beating Lockport & Plainfield. The Gold was pumped from a nervous game against the Storm & exploded for 20 runs to defeat a tired Hickory team. Hickory was in its first tournament and wound up 4th. Sara K hit her 1st grand slam lead the hit parade. Amy finished up and got the save.

Time for the championship game. Both teams were looking for a rematch and the game was everything promised. Sarah Herlod's home run was matched by one for the Napervillians. It was a tight game when things got exciting. A tag play at the plate and an accidential collision made for some lively discussions between umps, coaches and the peanut galleries. Just as in the previous game Naperville took a lead and the Rockers kept chipping away. The Rockers had their shot in the top of the 6th with the bases loaded and 2 outs, Lauren came off the bench to pinch hit. With her right hand taped up and hurting, she hit a shot to the gap in right. The right fielder made a great catch to end the inning and Naperville held on to hand the 12U Gold a 7 - 4 loss. With Lauren, Angela & Rebecca all hurting, the team came up a little short.

Overall the team posted a 6 -2 record for the weekend scoring 81 runs while giving up 24 runs. The girls were ready to play & hit. It showed the girls how to move up their game to the next level.

12U Gold Take 2nd in Berywn ???

Last weekend the 12U Gold took 2nd place in a rain shortened Berywn Bash tournament. The Gold went 4- 0 and played very well. The rains came early to shorten this very nice tournament. On to the action....

Friday night the 1st pool game was against the North Suburban Slammers. The Gold's bat were hot and put up a quick 6 runs in the first inning. The wind was blowing out strong to left but the girls hit the ball the other way all night long. Sarah pitched a solid game and won the game's MVP with everyone contributing. The Gold took the win 11-3. Remember this game for later.

Saturady morning was clear and cooler but the Gold came out swinging in the 8:00 am game just as hot as the night before. In the 1st inning, 16 girls batted to jump out to an early lead. Katho had the Lisle Slammers off balance all game & Rachel came in to close out the game. Ashley won the MVP with a great catch at 1st. The final was 16-0 and it was on to bracket play.

The 12U Gold was the number 1 seed versus the number 4 seed Woodridge Wildcats. This proved to be the toughest game played so far. The Woodridge pitcher used a good rising fastbal to keep the Gold hiters off balance. The defense was solid with Sara, Angela, Rachel & Rebecca all teaming up on a great relay home. No one agreed with the call, but it was a great play anyway. The Gold walked away with a hard fought 5-3 victory.

The 2nd pool game was against the Oak Park Huskies. The Gold started off with 4 runs in the 1st and then the rains began. So the game was suspended in the 1st inning until 11 am Sunday morning. After play resumed, the Huskies high scoring lineup was shut down and the Gold rolled to a 12-0 victory.

In a weekend where everyone else was rained out, the Gold was scheduled to play the only team left in the winners bracket, the North Suburban Slammers. Then the tournament that looked so promising turned for the worst when the storm clouds opened and the tournament was ended. The top 2 teams were undefeated in bracket play with the Gold 4-0 & Slammers 3-1 overall. The lone defeat for the Slammers was the 1st pool game between the 2 teams. The Gold had given up 6 runs, the Slammers 11. In the rainstorm; it was decided to give 1st place to the Slammers in direct disagreement with USSSA tie breaker rules.

The 12U Gold played a great tournament and really started to show the caliber of team they have become. They went undefeated and lost a championship with class.

12U Gold Win the Rocker's Softball Palooza Tournament

Last weekend was a great weekend for softball in the south suburbs. The weather was clear and just perfect for the 8 team tournament. There were 2 pools with the 11U Black, Homewood Heat, Orland Park A's and Palos Storm in the Red Pool. In the Blue Pool was the 12U Gold, DuPage Diamond Dogs, Downers Grove Rebels, and Beach Park Thunder. Off to pool play...

The first game matched the 12U Gold with the Downers Grove Rebels. The girls came out swinging and wrapped up a 13-0 victory. Katho, Hailey & Mel had key hits to get the bats going. The 2nd pool game was against the Beach Park Thunder. The Gold scatched out a couple of early runs and then had a couple of big innings. Sara, Angela & Megan lead the team with an efficient effort to post the 12-4 win. After a quick ride over to Kiwanis from McCarthy, the DuPage Diamond Dawgs were the next opponent. This game was tight from the 1st pitch. Both teams had some timely hitting but the Gold was holding onto a 4-2 lead heading into the bottom of the 4th ( and last inning). The Dawgs got 2 runners on and then laced a 3 run homer just inside the right field line. Another run followed as time expired for a 6-4 loss. So the Gold were 2-1 in pool play positioning them in 2nd place in the Blue Pool.

The championship round was single elimination so every play counted. The Gold drew the Orland Park A's in the 1st round. The Gold jumped out to an early lead and played well in the field. Amy, Sarah & Lauren all collected big hits. Solid outfield play finished off the A's for a 12-0 victory. On Sunday morning the sun was shining even though Coach Jack was back in town. The brackets put the 12U Gold vs. the 11U Black. Only one fact was certain, 1 Rocker team would move on. The first couple innings were tight with both teams playing well flashing the leather. Finally a big inning broke it open for the Gold. Megan's hit jumped right over the bag at 3rd & Allie returned to get some big hits. When the dust settled the Gold came out on top 10 - 3.

On to the championship game vs the Diamond Dawgs. The 1st inning set the tone with Sarah & Lauren getting on. Rebecca dug in and hit a bomb to straightway center to jump to a 2-0 lead. The Dawgs fought back with 1 of their own. Then the defense took over with a perfectly executed double play Sarah - Rachel -Rebecca with the tag at home. Throw in another double play and the bats started to heat up again. This time the Gold kept adding on runs and took the Championship with a 9 - 2 victory. A truely great team effort to bounce back against a very good DuPage team. Time to collect some hardware....

Weekend in Joliet

Last weekend the 12U Gold went 4 - 2 to take 7th place overall in a 27 team tournament in Joliet.
The 1st game was a 8-0 victory over the Plainfield Shockers. It was an early 7am game but the girls came out swinging and cruised to the win.
The 2nd game was a 10-2 win over the Diamond Queens. Kathleen pitched her 2nd complete game and had the opponents jumping at her changeup all day.
With a 2-0 record the 12U Gold won it's pool & it was off to bracket play.
The 1st opponent was the Plainfield Twisters, who had just handed the 11U Black it's 1st loss. The Gold jumped all over their #2 starter and batted around in the 2nd inning to run off with a 12-2 win.
Sunday was clear but cold with a stiff wind blowing in on field 6 like a hurricane. The morning game was against Palos Rippit Black, who the Gold defeated last fall in Tinley. It was a tight game but in their last at bat, the Gold fought back to tie the game at 4. With runners at 2 & 3rd and 1 out, the Gold just couldn't push the winning run across the plate. In the tie breaker, there was a great throw home to keep a run from scoring. But the next girl for Rippit hit a shot into the teeth of the wind for a 2 run homer. The Gold fought back to score 1 but fell short. .
The next opponent was the Diamond Queens again but this looked like a different team. The game was close and a late rally including a home run by Angela put the Gold on top 4-3.
The Duneland Flyers were the next team and it was a tough game. The bats were quiet with some fine plays by their defense on some at-them balls. The Gold fell 9-2 to complete the tourney.
Overall the Gold placed 7th. The 2 losses came to the 2nd & 3rd place teams in the tournament. With a play here, another hit here, they could have been in the championship. Next tourney - Rocker Palooza in Tinley.....

Thursday night vs Lemont Rockers in Worth at 5:45 PM - Wear Black

Sat morning vs Plainfield Schockers in Joliet at 7:00 AM

Yeah that's right game starts at 7:00 AM go to bed early

Round Robin Results

The round robin in Northlake was a tough day for the girls. A tough Trevians team fought back in the first game to win by a 6-5 score in their last at bat. The Gold played with 10 girls so everyone got a lot of playing time. The 2nd game was the Lady Tigers and the Gold fell behind early and fell 6-4. The last couple of innings were interesting as the Gold played with 2 outfielders. The final game was against the Hawks 96 team. This time with 9 girls in the lineup, a close fought battle was in hand. The Hawks won by 1 run to finish the day.

It was a challenging day playing with less than our normal 13 girls. Everyone had a lot of action, sometimes in their secondary positions. Outfield play was excellent with some great catches and backups. Keeping focus, making routine plays and knowing the game situation is key to winning close games. Let's get ready for Joliet next weekend..

12U Gold Win USSSA World Series Bid

The 12U Gold travelled north to Elmwood Park to compete this weekend in the Tigers USSSA World Series Qualifier. 18 teams were entered including 4 "A" teams and 3 11U teams.

The first game was against the Oak Park Huskies and despite the 8:00 am start and the wet outfield, the Gold played well and posted a 7-0 win Kathleen got the shutout with timely hitting.
The next opponent was the Chicago Outburst and another shutout 2-0. This time Megan got the big hit to seal the win. The Gold win their pool & on to championship play.

The 5:00 pm start with the cold windy damp weather made it tough on both teams. The Wasco Diamonds played a efficient game but the Gold was able to push across 4 runs. Wasco threatened but Kathleen made a perfect throw from center to Sarah to Rebecca to gun down the runner at the plate. A great victory....

Sunday opened against the Windmills White with a convincing 12-0 win. Ashley lead the way with her 1st home run of the day. The next game was the semifinal in the winners bracket. The Bolingbrook Rage hit the ball hard and jumped out to a 6-2 lead. The Gold fought back with another Ashley homer and some late hitting to a 6-5 score but fell short of the win.

On to the losers bracket and a rematch with the Wasco Diamonds. Just as in the previous game it was close with both teams making plays. The Gold tied the game at 4 - 4 but Angela was thrown out at home. The Gold had one more opportunity loading the bases but couldn't push across the tying run. Wasco went on to win the tournament playing 7 games on Sunday.

The 12U Gold wound up in 5th place out of 18 teams. Jack received a call from the USSSA which awarded the 12U Gold a bid to the World Series. Overall the team fell a little short of winning the championship, but accomplished another team goal. Winning a bid to Disney!!!!

12U Gold Win 14 - 4 Over the Mokena Storm

Saturday the wind was screaming out towards right field, the 12U Gold faced off against our rivals from the south the Mokena Storm. Rachel pitched her way out of a jam in the 1st inning and then the Gold's bats warmed up. A great bunt from Sarah and some timely hitting from the middle of the line-up plated 4 runs in the first. Megan caught the entire game and kept the baserunners from getting an extra base. The entire lineup contributed with doubles and a triple. Allie had a big 2 out single that scored 2 to seal the deal. Sarah & Kathleen finished up in relief and held a tough Storm team to only 4 runs for the victory.

Notre Dame Softball Camp 2008

Last year, the Tinley Park Rockers sent 18 players to the Notre Dame softball camp. This camp is instructed by the Notre Dame softball coaching staff and players. This camp starts on Sunday, July 13 and runs through July 17. This is a boarding camp. The girls wake up, have breakfasts, play softball, have lunch, play softball, have dinner, play softball. IN OTHER WORDS - THEY PLAY SOFTBALL! There is no better way to get our players ready for the upcoming world series.

I also want everyone to know that the girls all gave me positive feedback about the camp from last year. The younger girl's really liked it. They begged me to go back!

Check in on Sunday, July 13th is from 3-4pm.

See me if you need more info.

Practice Reminders & Schedules

We have practice on Saturday in Bolingbrook, starting at 7:00 p.m. The girls also have hitting this Sunday with Blaine starting at 1:00 p.m. We will keep the groups the same, it seems to be working, so no changes.
I am starting to "fill in" friendly games and possibly try to add another tournament or two, so I would like from each of you any and all dates that your daughter will not be available starting April 1st. Even if we do not have anything on the schedule, right now, if you definitely know that there is a day that your daughter will not be able to play; please let me know as soon as you possibly can (via email or the completed calendars that I passed out in October will work). If you have already told me about some days, please confirm again with me.
Let me say that this does not mean if a game or tournament comes up that (that makes sense for us to participate in) I will not put it on the schedule but I will know how many girls will be available for the added games. With 13 girls I can be missing 3 before I start thinking about not putting something on the schedule.
